Dear Newtown Families,

I hope you are continuing to enjoy a relaxing and well-deserved summer. This letter is a gentle reminder that we are moving closer to the opening of a new school year. The first day for students is Monday, August 27. Bus routes will be posted in the Newtown Bee Back to School edition on August 17 and listed on our website at Newtown Public Schools web site.

As Superintendent, I want the 2018-19 school year to be marked by pride, safe and inclusive schools, and academic pathways that offer engaging, student-centered learning opportunities in every classroom. Our District's Safe School Climate Committee will continue to influence the programs in place- including social and emotional practices- in order to provide a supportive environment for all. You can follow me on Twitter @Rodriguelorrie or contact my office at 203-426-7621.

As staff and administrators, our greatest focus remains on teaching and learning. We want only the best for your children and understand that communication is essential for a strong and healthy relationship. We are currently working on a new "face" for our district website. We want you, our parents, to have ongoing access to information - updates on student progress, new initiatives, and
school community events through Powerschool, newsletters, Facebook, and Twitter. Please review the 2018-19 School Calendar and School Hours listed on our website. Please note: there are 3-hour delayed opening and early dismissal schedules for weather-related emergencies.

As parents, your involvement in the academic lives of your children is not only encouraged but extremely important. We ask for your support in making sure your child attends school regularly, on time, and is prepared to learn. When students are absent, they miss important information and classroom interactions that support their progress as learners. Please contact the school when your child will be absent for any reason.

As partners, we hope to see you at events throughout the year to acknowledge the positive activities taking place in our schools and to celebrate the successes of our students. Our PTAs work diligently to support our schools throughout the year. They are always looking for new members and volunteers! You can find information about our PTAs on each school's webpage.

We have much to be proud of as a school district- a talented staff, dedicated students, and highly engaged families. Once again, I look forward to working with you and to a productive year.
